English 110--Research Project
Questions for our research project should come out of the themes we have been studying this semester inGlobal Issues, Local Arguments. Carefully consider the reading and discussions that have been part of the course to date.  There are a lot of ideas in our textbook, and you should try to find a topic that is personally meaningful in some way.  Begin with a genuine question that requires you to research the essay in order to answer it in a meaningful manner.  Review your reading on the English 120 website if you need help getting started with this stage of the research process. You can propose your own topic, or choose one from the list below:

  • Trading Goods and Jobs, (pp. 131-134 #3; #4; #5)
  • Crossing Borders, (pp. 199-201 #5; #7; #8; #9)
  • Protecting the Environment, (pp. 262-263 #3; #5; #6; #7)
  • Merging and Clashing Cultures, (pp. 320-321 #2; #3; #4; #5; #8)
  • Global Netizens, (pp. 381-383 #4; #5, #7; #8)
  • Defending Human Rights, (pp. 442-445 #3; #6; #7)
  • Fighting Global Disease, (pp. 496-498 #5; #7)

Research Proposal (about 3 pages) Due July 19th
Produce an exploratory essay, including a bibliography of at least 6-8 sources you’ve located on your chosen topic.  Use Nicole Cesmat’s exploratory essay on (RED) campaign as a model for this piece of the research project (pp. 97-99).  In this piece, you should state the problem, inquiry, or question that you would like to explore in your research and convince readers that it is an issue that needs attention.  This should include contextual material to help a reader understand the relevance of the query.  It can be informal and somewhat narrative, as you walk readers through your research process   Successful completion (72% or above) is a requirement for English 120 credit.
120 Exam Dates
Your English 120 exam will be administered via Moodle July 7th—July 11th. Review the entire website and pay special attention to the quiz questions to prepare for the Exam. Preparation for this self-paced course is your responsibility. Successful completion (72% or above) is a requirement for English 120 credit

Final Research Essay  Due July 26th
Based on the proposal and bibliography above, write a 6-10 page proposal argument on an issue question related to one of the issues for the semester’s readings.  Target a group of decision-makers who have the power to take action on the proposal (could be citizens and voters). The proposal argument should include all the important features of proposals and use evidence tailored to the audience’s values and interests. The argument needs to present and answer alternative or opposing views. The essay must follow MLA manuscript form and documentation style.  The purpose of this project is to show how well you have researched and synthesized information on your issue question, have developed your own proposal, and have defended your proposal with strong evidence and appropriate argumentative strategies.  In other words, it’s a culmination of all of the work you’ve done in this course.

Review the process outlined in the English 120 workbook for more specific help, including how to handle sources in your text and creating a works cited page.  See also, Lindsey Egan’s researched argument (pp. 58-64)  You must use a minimum of four (4) sources of at least two (2) different types (website, database, journal or other periodical, book, interview).
